Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala, celebrating 2006-07 as Medical tourism Year. The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) in partnership with the Govt. of Kerala has organized an International Conference and exhibition on “ Kerala Health Tourism 2006" and discussed the emerging trends, opportunities and challenges in Indian Health Tourism with health insurance companies, major hospitals, policy makers, tourism promoters, hotels and resorts, travel and tour operators for promotion of health tourism.

The study by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) and McKinsey reveal that the medical tourism in India could become a $2.3 billion business by 2012.

Kerala has gained international attention for health tourism and is becoming a popular health tourism hub. Kerala and Ayurveda have virtually become synonymous with each other. However, world-class facilities are also available in the other traditional forms of medicine as well as modern medical treatment. Kerala has an excellent track record in the fields of tourism and health care. World wide, health tourism, including dental tourism is booming tourism industry. Health care authorities, too, are keen to the tie up with effective health care delivery sources that can provide sophisticated care options for their citizens.
The major advantage of the medical tourism, dental tourism, in India is its cost effectiveness and competency along with attraction of tourism. The slogan, thus is ‘world class treatment at ‘one by tenth prices’. The total tour cost, including air fair, hospital expenses, hotel accommodation and added tourism experience, works out much less than the cost of surgery alone in many other countries.
Kerala is particularly well-suited to host this event since it is recognized for it excellent healthcare standards by world bodies such as the World Heath Organization and is currently going through a boom in private medical services. Moreover, the liberal social environment and traditional hospitality of the Kerala people, coupled with the outstanding tourism infrastructure makes it an ideal holiday destination and a hub for health tourism in the region.
